Biomechanics Reflection #4

In the story the wife reaches for the keys to her Cadillac and has only a finger and a thumb, which would greatly impact her ability to cook. Though in the story the old betting man calls the little finger useless it is actually very necessary for completing certain tasks and activities. I only assume since she is a wife in 1948 that one of her main occupations is cooking. Cooking requires being able to lift objects such as a large soup pot by the handles that would require the use of two hands. A possible adaptive solution could be to somehow widen/lengthen the pot handles making it so that she can place her forearms underneath the handles on either side to lift the pot. The handles would need to be thicker and further away from the pot so that she wouldn't burn herself when lifting it off the stove. The handles could be modified to be "v shaped" then go into a thicker, flat handle. This design could offer a stable handle to lift with her forearms but is far enough away from the pot so that she won't get burned.

  1. I really like the idea of this occupation! I would have never thought about the pinky finger causing so much trouble when carrying a pot, but it would affect the different types of grips such as the cylindrical, power, and hook grips!

  2. What a creative yet simple way to adapt to cooking and carrying/handling pots. We don't realize how useful such a small finger can be until we look at the daily activities we perform that require it.
